MCDE informs the public about threats to democracy and education
We promote positive action to strengthen popular control of public institutions and advance educational opportunity for all citizens.
The Michigan Coalition for Democracy and Education is composed of:
Individuals and organizations who believe in democratic control of government and public institutions in Michigan and the right of all citizens of the state to a high-quality educations from kindergarten through college.
Government belongs to the people, not corporations and special interests.
The immediate repeal of the Emergency Manager Law, which has taken power from the people across the state and resulted directly in the poisoning of the people of Flint.
Limit the power of special interests over government by reforming state campaign finance laws to limit the size of contributions and require complete disclosure of all contributions.
Measures to strengthen transparency & accountability of all public institutions at the city, township, county, and state levels.
A democratic society is one that advances the rights and development of each citizen. To ensure the long-term prosperity of our state, we must:
Dissolve the Educational Achievement Authority and return control of Detroit’s schools to the democratically elected school board
Significantly increase the high school graduation rate
Enact reforms so that the school boards and university boards of regents are accountable to, and act in the interests of, the people
Dramatically increase investment in all levels of public education, from pre- school through college, so that Michigan schools will once again be among the best in the nation.
Make college education affordable for all by increasing the level of state funding
